Marchal began martial arts in Appleton, Wisconsin, starting with wrestling before discovering judo. He became a Permanent Resident Athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs from the early 1980s through 1988.
His philosophy centers on ju, the judo principle of yielding to overcome. He applies this across judo, business, and daily life. He has also been a U.S. national team coach and continues to teach judo at his International Training Center on Guam, recognized by the Guam National Olympic Committee (GNOC).

From being among the first non-Japanese floor traders on the Tokyo Stock Exchange to CEO of one of Asia-Pacific's most disruptive electronic trading platforms, a 26-year progression across six institutions.

After Asia-Pacific finance, Marchal founded multiple businesses across Guam, Nevada, and the Pacific, all extending his core values of athletic excellence, wellness, and global exploration.

Joe married Chie Marchal (Japanese), and together they raised two children in Henderson, Nevada: Reina and Yuuto. Their Olympic household shaped Reina's path to NCAA gymnastics.

Competed in USAG elite qualifiers (Hope Program) as early as 2019. Placed 30th AA at the 2021 Women's Development Program National Championships (Junior C, 37.075). Committed to Oregon State in February 2024. Redshirted 2025 season. Debuted in 2026 with a 9.850 on floor vs. BYU. Pursuing Marketing at OSU.
